			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>American folk artist Shari Enge has been recognized for her creative originality by having an image of her <a href="http://oldsouldollco.com/uncle-sam-brother-jonathan.html">Uncle Sam</a> figure included in the prestigious <a href="http://www.ci.la.ca.us/CAD/events/index.html" target="_blank">2009 Calendar and Cultural Guide</a> presented by Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa and the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs celebrating <a href="http://www.infoplease.com/spot/bhmintro1.html" target="_blank">African American Heritage Month</a>.  February is the month that the City of Los Angeles joins the rest of the country in honoring our rich black heritage, specifically highlighting the work of artists who keep African American traditions alive and vibrant in our communities.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Our City is home to people originating form all around the world.  Each culture contributes to the rich diversity that makes Los Angeles an international capital.  I extend my best wishes for a memorable celebration.&#8221;<br />

<p>The male version of &#8220;Columbia&#8221;, another personification of the American nation as a whole, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Sam" target="_blank">&#8220;Uncle Sam&#8221;</a> was in fact an actual person, a Union provision supplier during the American Civil War.</p>
